Introduction
PVC UPVC CPVC pipes and Fittings in Plumbing
UPVC or Unplasticised PVC is also known as rigid PVC and is the most commonly used plastic pipe for the transportation of drinking water. As the name suggests, no plasticizer is added to the PVC compound and these pipes are light in weight and easy to handle. UPVC pipes are ideal for cold water plumbing in both residential and commercial projects. In some cases UPVC 15kg pressure pipes are also used for cold water plumbing.
CPVC or Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride pipes are tough rigid plastic pipes with chemical resistance over a broad temperature range. The heat resistance of CPVC pipes is relatively high and so they handle temperature up to 93deg. C making them suitable for hot water distribution .
CPVC pipes are the ideal choice for hot and cold water distribution in residential and commercial buildings and are used to carry drinking water and food liquids. They are used in water treatment systems as well.
Both UPVC and CPVC pipes are widely used in water distribution systems. The main difference being the temperature bearing capability which makes CPVC ideal for hot and cold water.
Difference between PVC & CPVC
Temperature resistance
The primary PVC CPVC difference lies in its resistance to temperatures. While CPVC can withstand up to 93 Deg C temperature which makes it suitable for both hot and cold water, PVC can withstand only up to 60 Deg C and as such is suitable for cold water applications only.
Fire Retardance
PVC LOI (limiting oxygen index) is 45. Hence it is self-extinguishing. Only chars due to fire.
CPVC has a better LOI than PVC (i.e. 60) hence it is also self- extinguishing. This gives CPVC much better fire retardant properties and makes it ideal for use in the fire-sprinkler application.
Installation
PVC plumbing systems are very easy to install using PVC solvent cement. No special tools & hardly any skills required. Most plumbers are already aware.
CPVC plumbing system is as easy to install as PVC. It requires only CPVC solvent cement and also does not need any special tools & hardly any skills.
Joint Quality
PVC joints are very good, strong & homogeneous. Joined with the help of PVC Solvent cement and the process called the Cold welding process.
CPVC joints are also very good, strong & homogeneous. It is joined with the help of CPVC Solvent cement and the process called the Cold welding process has over 50yrs history. When compared to PVC, the design of CPVC based on the standard is such that the pipes are relatively more flexible making jointing easier and more foolproof than PVC.
Price differences between CPVC and UPVC
The price difference of CPVC and UPVC as raw materials is significant however when it comes to plumbing, the difference becomes marginal.
CPVC being a higher strength plastic with better temperature resistant properties can be made thinner to give similar pressure performance hence saving considering amount of material. This makes the price difference between CPVC and UPVC insignificant and pricing of CPVC systems attractive, making it ideal for domestic hot and cold water plumbing applications.
Ajay pipes offers Special Transition Bush to connect CPVC pipes with UPVC or PVC pipes. These are technically designed making Transition bush more efficient and reliable than any other traditional pipe transition methods. In this case only CPVC solvent can be used to join CPVC to PVC or UPVC pipes.
Threaded adaptors can also be used for connections between CPVC and UPVC pipes and fittings.
