CPVC Definition
CPVC plumbing is made from a thermoplastic material called or Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride pipes are thermoplastic pipes made with CPVC resins. CPVC is made by post chlorination of PVC to form a material whith 67% chlorine. CPVC plumbing system consists of CPVC plumbing pipes , CPVC plumbing fittings, CPVC threaded adaptors, CPVC valves, CPVC unions, CPVC flanges, CPVC solvent cements and other accessories. This system isare corrosion resistant, non-scaling, tough and rigid, resistant to chemicals, reliable, and can withstand high heat temperature and pressure, . These systems are very easy to install and convenient to handle thus making them an ideal material for residential, commercial, and industrial piping and fire sprinkler systems.
CPVC plumbing system sizes and availability in India
Two types of Pipes & fittings are available in India:
1. Copper Tube Size (CTS): Generally CTS sizes are the most commonly used sizes and suffice most residential applications. These come in the following sizes:
½” (15mm), ¾”(20mm), 1” (25mm), 1 ¼”(32mm), 1 ½”(40mm), 2” (50mm).
CTS pipes are available in either SDR 11 or SDR 13.5 and fittings in SDR 11.
2. Iron Pipe Size (IPS): These are used where large volume water supply is required such as residential projects, hotels, hospitals and industries. These come in the following sizes:
2 ½”(75mm), 3” (90mm), 4” (110mm), 6” (160mm) & 8” (200mm) in Iron Pipe sizes (IPS).
IPS pipes and fittings are available in either Sch 40 or Sch 80.

- ASTM D2846 : Specification for (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride) (CPVC) Plastic Hot & Cold water distribution systems. Material designation CPVC 4120.
- ASTM F493 : Standard Specification for Solvent Cements for (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride) (CPVC) Plastic Pipe & Fittings
