Introduction
UPVC Fittings
UPVC stands for Unplasticised PVC and is also known as rigid PVC since no plasticizer has been added to the PVC compound which makes them the most rigid form of PVC. UPVC pipe fittings are manufactured using the molding process on Injection molding machines.
UPVC pipe fittings are commonly used with UPVC pipes for transportation of water under pressure inside homes, buildings and industries. In India UPVC fittings normally refer to the white colored fittings which are used with UPVC plumbing pipes. These are sometimes also known as bathroom pipe fittings.
Features of UPVC Pipe fittings
- Light weighted and are easy to handle
- Do not corrode & resistant to scale formation
- High mechanical strength and durability
- Resistant to fire, chemicals & UV exposure
- 100% recyclable
- Cost-effective and require low or no maintenance
- Suitable for applications upto 60 Deg C
- Jointing with UPVC solvent cement
Applications of UPVC fittings
1. Plumbing
UPVC fittings are used with UPVC pipes that are ideal for cold water supply lines in residential installations. These can withstand high pressure so can also be used in high rise buildings.
2. Industrial Applications
UPVC fittings are used for water supply pipes in industries for low and medium pressure applications.
3. Water treatment plants
UPVC pipe fittings are used in water treatment plants for drinking water applications.
4. Chemical Industry
UPVC pipe fittings are used in the transportation of chemicals and hot corrosive fluids that includes a wide range of inorganic acids, bases used in chemical processing.
UPVC Pipe fittings sizes available
UPVC fittings schedule 80: ½” (15mm), ¾”(20mm), 1” (25mm), 1 ¼”(32mm), 1 ½”(40mm), 2” (50mm), 2 ½”(75mm), 3” (90mm), 4” (110mm), 6” (160mm) & 8” (200mm)
UPVC fittings are also available in Schedule 40 in 2 ½”(75mm), 3” (90mm), 4” (110mm) sizes.
TYPES OF UPVC FITTINGS
Wide range of UPVC bathroom pipe fittings are available:
PLAIN UPVC FITTINGS (SOLVENT JOINT)
UPVC Plain fittings are fittings which are used to connect 2 or more UPVC pipes using UPVC solvent cements. They are of different types like UPVC Tee, UPVC Reducing Tee, UPVC Elbow or bend, UPVC Reducing Elbow, UPVC 45 degree Elbow, UPVC Socket or coupler, UPVC Reducing coupler, UPVC Bushings, Step over bends, Long bends, End cap, 3-way Elbows etc.
THREADED UPVC FITTINGS
Threaded pipe fittings are used to join the pipe with other bathroom fittings or plumbing equipment like taps, showers, pumps, tanks etc. The threads may be of UPVC or of Brass. Usually Brass insert type UPVC fittings are recommended for pressure application. They are also of different varieties such as Male adaptor or MTA, Female adaptor or FTA.
UPVC TRANSITION PIPE FITTINGS
These are threaded pipe fittings with Brass inserts like Brass Tee, Brass MTA, Brass FTA, and Brass Elbow.
UPVC BEND OR ELBOW FITTING (90 DEG OR 45 DEG)
Bends are used to transport liquids which require diversion. Due to their long radius and smooth change of direction, the pipe bend has ess pressure drop and a smooth flow of the liquid.
UPVC TEE OR WYE FITTING
Tees & Wyes fittings are used to connect three pieces of pipes. Tees have one inlet and two outlets that resemble the right angle (90 degrees) in the shape of T, whereas Wye drainage fittings are shaped like a “Y” with two inlets coming together at 45 degrees into a single outlet in the drainage applications. It can be used to combine the flow from two inlets to one outlet as well.
UPVC SOCKET/COUPLER FITTING
A coupler is a very short length of pipe or tube, with a socket at one or both the ends that let the pipes to be joined. Coupling can also be used to repair a broken or leakage pipe. Reducer sockets can be used to join a bigger pipe with a smaller pipe.
UPVC FLANGE FITTING
Flange fittings are flat and round to create a tight seal with rubber washer, bolts and clamps. These types of plumbing fittings are used when pipes are passed through walls, ceilings, and floors.
UPVC UNION FITTING
Just like couplings, union fittings also connect two similar pipes. There are three pieces in a union namely a nut, a female end, and a male end. As soon as the female and the male end are joined, the nuts provide the pressure needed to seal the joint.
UPVC VALVE
Valves are used to adjust the flow of fluids. There are many types of valves. Ball, Butterfly, Check, Diaphragm, Gate, Globe, Knife Gate, Parallel Slide, Pinch, Piston, Plug, Sluice, Concealed etc. Check Valve or Non-return valves also are known as check valves that allow the liquid to flow in one direction.
UPVC BUSH OR REDUCER BUSHING
Bush fittings are called as reducer bushings and are used to connect two pipes of different sizes. The larger diameter of the bushing fits inside the larger pipe and the smaller end of the bushing fits inside the smaller pipe.
UPVC END CAP
Cap fittings cover the end of the pipe to stop the flow of water. They are used at the endpoint of the piping system and are also used in piping headers for future connections.
UPVC ADAPTOR FITTINGS
Adaptors are plumbing fittings used to connect pipes that are of different types or any kind of plumbing fixture or equipment. An adaptor can be male or female threaded on one end which may be all plastic or brass.
UPVC END PLUG
Plug fittings are used at the terminal point of the pipe to seal the opening and are similar to cap fittings. However, caps fit over the opening while the plug fits into the threaded part of the opening to seal it.
UPVC TANK NIPPLE
Tank nipples with both ends and one end thread usually connect the whole piping system with the overhead tank.
UPVC Fittings Standards :
