Water Pressure
For a home owner and building manager, one common issue they have to deal with is low water pressure. As every building is different, so too are the causes of their water pressure problems. However, once the causes are identified, they can usually be quickly fixed. Here are a few common reasons why buildings lose water pressure.
Improper Design
In most cases a single pipeline may supply to multiple bathrooms. If the pipeline size is inadequate i.e. more number of units are connected to the pipeline and all operate simultaneously, fall in pressure shall be encountered.
Similarly inside the bathroom if the mainline and distribution lines are not sized properly, operating more than one tap simultaneously will result in pressure drop.
In such a case, take help of an expert to understand your options.
Water Leaks
Another common reason why buildings lose water pressure is leakages. Water leaks rob from the incoming supply and causes significant drop in water pressure. While some leaks are visible, others are hidden. It’s best to contact a commercial plumber to help you detect leaks in your water system.
Rusting Pipes
When it comes to its causes, rusting pipes are often a major culprit. As water pipes rust, the by-products of water corrosion build up on the interior of the pipes. This gradually narrows the pipes’ useful diameter, making it more difficult for water to pass through them.
Rusting pipes are also prone to breakage, which can cause blocked drains and other associated issues. Best to call a commercial plumber to inspect the quality of your pipes.
Scale formation
Like rusting, scaling of pipes shall cause deposition of hard salts inside the surface of the pipeline which will gradually reduce its flow. After a period of time, the flow can get severely restricted to the extent that water shall drip from faucets. Descaling such pipes is very difficult and only solution available may be to replace them. It is always better to avoid scaling issues by investing in a water treatment system for your building.
Problem with pumping system
In case your building is run with hydro-pneumatic systems, it is possible that loss of pressure may be due to the pumping system installed to provide water. Check the pumping system and ensure that it is properly maintained and working optimally.
Valve Problems
The main water valve in commercial buildings regulates the inflow of water. While valves are quite robust, they can break down from age and over-use. Once the quality of a water valve is compromised, it can lead to a decrease in the volume of water entering the building.
As water volume decreases, so too does the perceived water pressure.
Water Supply Issues
Sometimes, changes in the city’s water supply can affect the water pressure of your building. For example, if a local government adds new connections to existing capacity, the change can naturally sap your water supply and pressure in the process.
While there are many reasons why buildings lose water pressure, there are also many solutions, too. In some cases, the use of water-pressure booster pumps and pressure tanks can solve your building’s problems, while in others, it may be a case of needing to replace water valves or old pipes.
If your building is losing water pressure, get in touch with a expert plumber immediately to get to the root of the problem as soon as poss
