Air Admittance Valve
Air Admittance Valve
Every drainage system needs a way to breathe. Without it, water flowing through waste pipes creates negative pressure that pulls trap seals dry, and once that seal breaks, sewer gas has a clear path back into your building. An Air Admittance Valve (AAV) solves this without the cost and complexity of a traditional vent stack that runs through the roof.
Ajay Pipes manufactures AAVs engineered for exactly this job: a mechanical, one-way valve that opens to let air into the drainage system when pressure drops, then seals shut the moment pressure normalizes. Air goes in. Odor and gas don’t come out. It’s a simple mechanism doing an essential job, quietly, and for years.
How an Air Admittance Valve Works
An AAV sits on a drain line, typically above the trap it’s protecting. Under normal conditions, the valve stays closed, held shut by gravity and a light spring or gasket seal. When a fixture drains (a toilet flushes, a sink empties), the rush of water momentarily drops air pressure in the pipe below it (negative pressure, or siphonage).
That pressure drop is what triggers the valve. It opens just long enough to let room air into the pipe, equalizing pressure and protecting the trap seal at nearby fixtures. Once pressure stabilizes, the valve closes again, sealing the system and blocking sewer gas and odor from escaping into the living space.
It’s a passive system: no electricity, no manual operation, no moving parts beyond the valve mechanism itself.
Where AAVs Are Used
Air Admittance Valves are most valuable in situations where running a full vent pipe to open air outside the building isn’t practical:
- Island fixture installations: kitchen islands, bathroom vanities away from an exterior wall
- Renovations and additions: adding a bathroom or laundry drain without breaking into existing venting
- Multi-story buildings: reducing the number of roof penetrations needed
- Basement fixtures: venting below-grade plumbing without long vertical runs

Why Choose Ajay Air Admittance Valves
- Quick response time: opens and reseals fast enough to protect trap seals during peak flow
- Maintains high flow rate: doesn’t restrict drainage performance
- Rigid plastic construction: built for long-term structural durability
- High durability design: engineered to withstand repeated open/close cycles over years of use
- Leak-free jointing: fast, secure installation with solvent-cement or push-fit connections
- Low maintenance: easy to inspect and clean, no special tools required
- BS EN 12056:2000 compliant: meets the European standard for gravity drainage systems
- Kitemark licensed and CE marked: independently certified for quality and safety
Operating temperature range: -20°C to 60°C, suitable for both indoor ambient conditions and more demanding installation environments.
